Frequently asked questions
Straight answers about weather, timing, reports and the rules we fly under.
Weather and timing
What weather do you need?
Light wind, no rain and reasonable visibility. Thermal roof work needs a temperature difference, so we usually fly early morning or late afternoon in daylight after a clear day. Solar checks need decent sun. If the weather is wrong we move the booking rather than fly a bad day.
How long does a job take?
A single house roof is usually 30–60 minutes on site. Solar and larger roofs take a little longer. Farm, forestry and 3D mapping jobs depend on hectares and can take a half or full day. Most reports are back within 2–5 business days of the flight.
Reports and what you pay
What is in the report?
For thermal roof work: annotated thermal stills, matching RGB photos, a plain-language summary and suggested next steps. Mapping jobs get orthomosaics or models in agreed formats. See the sample report page for an example.
Do I still pay if you find nothing?
Yes. The fee covers the flight, processing and report, and applies whatever we find. A clean result is still useful information.
Roofs and access
Why don't you do thermal leak checks on membrane or metal roofs?
Metal roofs reflect the sky and surroundings in thermal, so readings are unreliable. Membrane roofs can hide water in layers that thermal does not show consistently from the air. We would rather not sell a check that cannot answer the question. We don't take moisture-meter readings either. We can still do a photo check on any roof.
Do you need to get on my roof or into the house?
No. We fly from a safe spot on the ground. Indoor access is only needed if you ask for something extra.
Rules, travel and insurance
What are the Part 101 limits?
We fly under CAA Part 101: daylight only, within visual line of sight, under 120 m, and clear of people who are not part of the job. We do not fly at night. Some sites near Hamilton Airport or other controlled airspace need extra permission or may not be possible. We check before we quote.
Do you charge for travel?
Travel is free within 40 km of our Te Awamutu base, then $1.10 per km.
Are you insured?
Yes, we carry public liability insurance.
